Giveaway: Treasuring Christ When Your Hands are Full

Today, I am excited to bring you a wonderful giveaway: the fruit of many hours of work, by my friend, Gloria Furman.  Gloria is going to introduce herself to you below, but I wanted to speak a few words about her first.

Interestingly, Gloria is a friend that I have yet to “meet”.  We connected via Facebook a few months back, and since then, have kept in touch remotely. However, I could sense immediately that were we to live closer, we would spend a handful of moments at the park together.

It is Gloria’s integrity that I have come to respect and admire most over the past few months.  Gloria loves the Lord.  She deeply respects God’s teaching.  And she passionately desires to share the joy of knowing and serving God with other women.  It is this desire that is highlighted most in her encouraging new book, Treasuring Christ When Your Hands are Full.

Please meet Gloria.  A friend I am privileged to know, and one day, hope to “meet”!

Who is Gloria Furman?

I’m a follower of Jesus Christ, wife to Dave, mother of four young children, and a Tex-Mex enthusiast. When my husband and I moved to the Middle East in 2008 to plant Redeemer Church of Dubai it was just the two of us and our baby girl, and we had no idea what the Lord was going to do. Not a day goes by that we’re not astonished by God’s grace in calling us here, in using us to minister to people from many nations, and in blessing us with three more children along the way. In my spare time I love to write – my books include “Glimpses of Grace: Treasuring the Gospel in Your Home” (Crossway, 2013) and “Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full: Gospel Meditations for Busy Moms” (Crossway, 2014). I blog occasionally at

What Inspired You to Write Treasuring Christ?

This book was borne out of a need to understand the storyline behind motherhood. I had always heard that my “hands are full,” but for too long I thought that phrase was a put down or a pointer to meaninglessness. So, I looked to a biblical theology of motherhood as it is laid out in Scripture to discover that God made motherhood for himself. And like everything else, the work I do in mothering is an expression of worship.

What do You Hope Moms of Young Children will Gain by Reading Your Book?

My biggest hope and prayer for this little book is that moms would see the sufficiency of Jesus for their motherhood. Busy moms don’t have time for fake hope (I write this with the authority of a woman who has dabbled in countless cisterns of fake hope). When Jesus comforted his disciples saying, “In this world you will have trouble,” he did not end that thought with, “but take heart because you’re better off than so-and-so and her kids.” He said, “take heart I have overcome the world (John 16:33)” Moms need Jesus, and I hope this book points them straight to him.

  • Dubai is the largest of these emirates, with a population of over 2 million residents
  • Dubai boasts the tallest building in the world, the incredible Burj Khalifa
  • Dubai is officially Muslim, but is known for its atmosphere of tolerance and its progressive attitude toward religions of all kinds

  1. Haven’t commented before, but I’ve loved reading your blog! And this book sounds right up my alley- 3 kids in 18 months- hands are definitely full!

  2. Oh wow! I would love to win a copy of Treasuring Christ When Your Hands are full. As I type this, I am cooking oatmeal, listening to my almost 2 year old and 7 month old babbling away, planning a baby shower for a friend, and prioritizing my tasks for the day. That book sounds refreshing! Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

  3. Several friends have told me about this book, and I hope to get a copy. As I’m listening to my little people this morning while I was planning on reading my Bible (they woke up extra early!) I think I could benefit greatly from reading this book. 😉

  4. It’s so easy to fall into the thinking that when I have accomplished the to-do list (ie. when my hands are not full), that I will be able to grow closer to Christ. But whether it’s the small children season (my current station) or empty nesting or retirement, Scripture seems to point to always having our hands full – full of serving him and focusing less on self. I can’t wait to read Gloria’s book – I’m sure she will give the encouragement that we, young moms, need to hear as we seek to juggle and love the Lord. Please pick me for the free copy!

  5. I was just about to buy this book for a friend of mine and me to do a study together! We are both moms of small children and we read a review of this book and thought it would be encouraging to read together.

  6. Thanks for sharing Maryanne. In my little world of my hands being full or overflowing, I find I am often weary. And often it is hard to believe the truth when I am overwhelmed and children do not seem like a blessing. So I need things (like books or other people) who point me back to Christ in these times.

  7. Thanks for the giveaway!! I often feel so discouraged that my hands are too full to get to the things that I want to have time for — too full to make a meal for a friend who is having surgery, too full to send that encouraging note in the mail, too full to take time to listen to my daughter’s painstakingly blow-by-blow description of her art project. May we find the Lord to be sufficient for all we need, not trying to take on more than He has called us to!!

  8. Wow – God’s timing as usual – perfect. We as leaders just picked up this book TODAY as our next study for our mom’s group, Heart-to-Heart. Over 40 mom’s will be studying this book and working through how motherhood is a sacred calling by God and how Christ is enough for them in their busy and yet sometimes mundane lives. Blessings to you. Looking forward to this study an all the learning we’ll do.

  9. Thanks for sharing your new friend with us Maryanne! Sounds like a wonderful book and what a fascinating life! I’m always in awe of people like Gloria who step out in such courageous ways for God!!

  10. As a mom of three and a business owner, being busy is an understatement. It is so easy to loose focus or not make time for your own Christian walk due to other demands. Win or not, I look forward to searching for this books; not only for myself, but my mom friends as well.

  11. Thank’s so much for doing a giveaway of this book! :)
Also, so nice of you to open it up to Canadian residents, of which I am ! That doesn’t happen often, so I do appreciate it a lot!!!
I read that YOU bought the extra copy yourself. What a gracious blessing that you are pouring over into someone else’s life. I am rejoicing for the winner already and know that she will be blessed!
    Thank you, Maryanne

  12. Sounds wonderful! I love your blog, so very encouraging. I have 3 boys under 3 and it’s a treat to sit with some coffee and read the blog posts. :)

  13. I can’t go anywhere with the four kids without people saying ” you sure have your hands full” :) this sounds like a book written especially for me- I’m going to order one today. I’m very much enjoying your blog Maryanne- you are real, honest, wise and funny. Xoxo
